Mirror Over a Fireplace: Size Rules, Mantel Ideas and the Mirrors That Fit

On this page
The wall above a fireplace is the one place in a living room that everybody looks at, and a mirror over the fireplace is the classic way to fill it. It reflects light back into the room, makes the mantel look deliberate and leaves you free to change everything else around it each season. Getting it right comes down to three things: the size against the mantel, the shape against the room, and keeping the mirror clear of the heat.
This guide covers the sizing rules, five ideas for styling a mirror over a mantel, and seven mirrors that suit the spot, from a gold baroque arch to a plain black rectangle. Sizes and frames come from each listing. For more on where mirrors go and why, see my guide to feng shui mirror placement, and for heavy mirrors, how to hang a heavy mirror.
Should You Put a Mirror Over a Fireplace?
For most living rooms, yes. A mirror over the fireplace does what art cannot: it doubles the light from the windows opposite, it makes a small room feel deeper, and it gives the mantel a focal point without competing with the fire itself. The overmantel mirror is a long tradition, which is why many older houses still have one built in.
When a Mirror Works Over a Mantel
- The wall faces a window, so the mirror reflects daylight and a view.
- The room is small or dark and needs the light bounced around.
- You want a focal point that does not compete with a TV elsewhere in the room.
When to Choose Something Else
- The mirror would reflect clutter, a busy hallway or the back of a sofa.
- The TV has to go above the fireplace. You cannot have both on the same wall.
- The fireplace is used often and has no mantel shelf, so the wall above gets hot.
Mirror Over Fireplace Rules: Size and Height
Width: About Two-Thirds of the Mantel
The rule designers use is a mirror about two-thirds to three-quarters as wide as the mantel shelf. Over a 60 inch mantel, that is a mirror around 40 to 45 inches wide. Narrower than half the mantel and the mirror looks lost; as wide as the mantel and it looks like a window.
| Mantel width | Mirror width | Good shapes |
|---|---|---|
| 40 to 48 inches | 28 to 36 inches | Arch, round, small rectangle |
| 50 to 60 inches | 36 to 45 inches | Arch, rectangle, large round |
| 60 to 72 inches | 40 to 54 inches | Wide arch, large rectangle |
Height: A Few Inches Above the Shelf
Hang the bottom of the frame about 4 to 8 inches above the mantel shelf so the two read as one composition. Higher than about 12 inches and the mirror floats away from the fireplace. If you lean the mirror instead, stand it on the back of the shelf and secure the top to the wall.
Heat and Safety
A mantel shelf deflects most of the heat rising from the opening. Without one, the wall right above a wood fire can get hot. Check your fireplace or insert manual for the clearance it gives to combustible materials above the opening, keep wood, resin and painted frames outside that zone, and choose a metal frame and tempered glass if the mirror will sit close to the heat. A cold, decorative fireplace has no such limits.
Mirror Over Fireplace Ideas
1. A Wide Arch for a Traditional Room
An arched mirror echoes the curve of many fireboxes and adds height to a low mantel. Gold or bronze frames suit a period living room; a thin black arch suits a modern one.
2. A Round Mirror for a Modern Mantel
A round mirror softens a hard, rectangular fireplace surround. Go large, at least 36 inches, so it holds the wall. Pair it with one tall object on one side and a low one on the other.
3. A Large Rectangle for a Minimal Look
A plain black or brass rectangle, hung landscape, is the cleanest option and reflects the most room. It is also the easiest shape to fit to a wide mantel.
4. A Leaning Mirror for an Easy, Layered Mantel
Lean a mirror on the back of the shelf and layer a small piece of art, a candle and a vase in front. It looks relaxed and needs no drilling, but secure the top with a cleat or anti-tip strap.
5. A Statement Baroque Frame
An ornate gold frame turns the mirror into the main event. Keep the mantel below nearly empty, two candlesticks at most, so the frame has room.
Mirrors That Suit the Spot Over a Fireplace
These seven are sized for a mantel and built with metal frames and safety glass. Sizes are width by height in inches as the listings give them.

Editor's choice · Best for a Long Mantel
Besdomus 48x33 Gold Baroque Fireplace Mirror
- Mid-range
- Size (in) 48 x 33
- Shape Baroque arch
- Frame Metal, gold
- Glass 4mm tempered
The Besdomus is the only mirror here sold specifically as a fireplace mirror, and its listing does the sizing for you: at 48 inches wide by 33 tall, the seller says it fits mantels and sideboards of 64 to 72 inches with a fireplace opening up to 48 inches. That matches the two-thirds rule exactly.
The frame is metal with baroque detailing and a distressed finish at the top, in gold. The glass is 4mm tempered, which breaks into small blunt pieces, a sensible choice above a fireplace.
The listing does not give the weight. A 48 inch metal frame is heavy, so hang it with two fixings into the chimney breast, using masonry anchors if the wall is brick.
What I like
- Sized by the seller for 64 to 72 inch mantels
- Ornate baroque detail with a distressed top
- 4mm tempered glass
- Metal frame
Keep in mind
- Weight not stated, and it is a big piece
- Ornate style will not suit a modern room
Best Modern Arch
CIRCUMI 48x40 Black Arched Mirror
- Mid-range
- Size (in) 48 x 40
- Shape Wide arch
- Frame Aluminum, black
- Glass Tempered float
For a modern living room, a thin black arch over a white or brick fireplace is one of the cleanest looks there is. The CIRCUMI is 48 inches wide by 40 tall with a slim black aluminum alloy frame, described as treated against corrosion and scratches.
The size suits a mantel of about 65 to 72 inches. At 40 inches tall, it also adds a lot of height, so it works best with ceilings of 8 feet or more.
The glass is shatterproof tempered float glass, and it comes with expansion screws and a guide. The seller offers a replacement if it arrives damaged. CIRCUMI makes the same arch in smaller sizes, including the gold one below.
What I like
- Wide 48 by 40 arch
- Black aluminum frame, anti-rust treated
- Tempered shatterproof float glass
- Expansion screws included
Keep in mind
- Tall at 40 inches, so check your ceiling height
- Weight not stated
Best for a Smaller Mantel
CIRCUMI 40x30 Gold Arched Mirror
- Mid-range
- Size (in) 40 x 30
- Shape Arch
- Frame Aluminum, gold
- Glass Tempered float
The gold version of the CIRCUMI arch, at 40 by 30 inches, suits a mantel of around 54 to 60 inches. The frame is gold aluminum alloy and the glass is tempered, with the same anti-corrosion treatment and replacement promise as the larger black one.
Gold works well over a white or cream fireplace in a warmer room. The frame is slim, so it reads as a fine gold line, which keeps the look light.
For more gold frames, from brushed to antique, my gold mirrors page compares seven.
What I like
- 40 by 30 inches, sized for a mid-size mantel
- Gold aluminum alloy frame
- Tempered shatterproof glass
- Same build as the 48x40 black
Keep in mind
- Thin frame looks light on a heavy stone surround
- Weight not stated
Best Rectangle
CIVENO 48x36 Black Rectangle Mirror
- Mid-range
- Size (in) 48 x 36
- Shape Rounded rectangle
- Frame Aluminum, black
- Glass HD float, safety film
A rectangle hung landscape is the simplest mirror over a fireplace and reflects the most of the room. The CIVENO is 48 by 36 inches with a black aluminum alloy frame and rounded corners, and it mounts vertically or horizontally.
Hung horizontally, it suits a mantel of 65 to 72 inches. The glass is HD float glass with an explosion-proof treatment and a shatterproof film.
It is sold as a bathroom mirror, which tells you the frame is built for moisture and will not mind the dry heat above a mantel shelf. If you want the same look in a finish other than black, my decorative mirrors page has more.
What I like
- 48 by 36 inches, hangs either way
- Black aluminum alloy frame
- Shatterproof film on HD glass
- Rounded corners
Keep in mind
- Plain by design
- Weight not stated
Best Round
CIVENO 36 Inch Black Round Deep Frame Mirror
- Mid-range
- Size (in) 36 round
- Shape Round
- Frame Deep aluminum, black
- Glass HD float, shatterproof
A round mirror softens a square, modern fireplace surround. The CIVENO is 36 inches across with a deep black aluminum frame, which gives the circle more presence on the wall than a thin rim would.
Thirty-six inches suits a mantel of about 48 to 54 inches. On a longer mantel, a round looks small; add tall objects on each side or choose an arch.
The glass is HD float glass with shatterproof treatment, and it comes with pre-installed hooks and wall hardware. For more circles, see my decorative mirrors.
What I like
- 36 inch round, big enough for a mantel
- Deep aluminum frame for a bolder outline
- Shatterproof HD glass
- Pre-installed hooks
Keep in mind
- A round fits mantels up to about 54 inches best
- Weight not stated
Best Classic
Micasso 40x29 Vintage Gold Arched Mirror
- Mid-range
- Size (in) 40 x 29
- Shape Baroque arch
- Frame Metal, vintage gold
- Glass 4mm tempered
The Micasso is the baroque mirror for a mid-size mantel. The listing says its 40 by 29 inch size is meant for 40 to 60 inch mantels and consoles, which puts it right in the middle of most living room fireplaces.
The frame is metal in a vintage gold with ornate French-style detail, and the glass is 4mm tempered, which the listing describes as breaking into small, blunt pieces.
An ornate frame looks best with little on the mantel below it: a pair of candlesticks or a single vase. Its listing reads much like the Besdomus, so choose between the two by the width of your mantel.
What I like
- Sized by the seller for 40 to 60 inch mantels
- Ornate French-style baroque frame
- 4mm tempered glass
- Metal frame
Keep in mind
- Weight not stated
- Ornate style needs a quiet mantel below
Best for Leaning
Wemily 36x28 Antique Gold Beaded Arch Mirror
- Mid-range
- Size (in) 36 x 28
- Shape Beaded arch
- Frame Cast iron, antique gold
- Glass 4mm, safety film
If you want to lean a mirror on the mantel rather than drill into the chimney, the Wemily is a good candidate. The listing says it can lean against a wall or hang on the two pre-installed reinforced clips, and at 36 by 28 inches it sits comfortably on a mantel shelf.
The frame is heavy cast iron with a beaded border in an antique dark gold, and the glass is 4mm with an explosion-proof film. The weight is 22.5 pounds, so even when leaning, secure the top to the wall with a cleat or an anti-tip strap.
The seller recommends two people to hang it. My guide on securing a leaning mirror applies on a mantel too.
What I like
- Can lean or hang, per the listing
- Cast iron frame with a beaded border
- 4mm glass with a safety film
- Weight published: 22.5 pounds
Keep in mind
- 22.5 pounds needs two people to hang
- Dark antique gold can look heavy in a light room
How I Chose These Mirrors
- Mantel sizes. From 36 to 48 inches wide, to suit mantels from about 48 to 72 inches.
- Metal frames. Every pick has a metal frame, which suits the warm, dry wall above a mantel shelf.
- Safety glass. Tempered glass or a safety film on every mirror.
- A spread of shapes. Arches, a rectangle and a round, in gold and black.
- Price tiers, not prices. Prices change daily, so I give tiers and send you to the live listing.
Styling the Mantel Around the Mirror
Symmetrical
Center the mirror and place matching objects on each side: two candlesticks, two vases or two lamps. It is the formal, traditional look and the hardest to get wrong.
Asymmetrical
Center the mirror and balance a tall object on one side with a group of low objects on the other. It feels more relaxed and suits a modern room.
Layered
Lean the mirror at the back and put smaller framed art in front, overlapping the bottom of the mirror. Add greenery to soften it.
Seasonal
A mirror is a neutral backdrop, so garlands, candles and branches change with the season without moving the mirror. Keep anything flammable well away from the firebox when the fire is lit.
In most living rooms, yes. A mirror over the fireplace reflects light from the windows, makes the room feel larger and gives the mantel a focal point. Skip it if it would reflect clutter, if the TV has to go on that wall, or if the wall above an unshielded opening gets hot.
Try a symmetrical mantel with matching candlesticks on each side, an asymmetrical one with a tall vase balanced against low objects, or a layered look with the mirror leaning at the back and small art in front. Greenery and candles soften any of them, and swapping them each season keeps the mantel fresh.
Choose a mirror about two-thirds to three-quarters as wide as the mantel shelf. Over a 60 inch mantel, that is 40 to 45 inches wide; over a 48 inch mantel, about 32 to 36 inches. Hang the bottom of the frame 4 to 8 inches above the shelf so the mirror and fireplace read as one piece.
Yes, especially over a square, modern surround, where the circle softens the hard lines. Go big, at least 36 inches, and keep it for mantels up to about 54 inches wide. On a longer mantel, a round looks small, so add tall objects on each side or choose an arch instead.
In feng shui tradition, a mirror over the fireplace is often described as unsettling, because fire and water elements clash. Practitioners usually suggest art instead, or a mirror only if it reflects something pleasant. This is a belief, not a safety rule; the practical concerns are heat and what the mirror reflects.
