How I Chose These Cheap Bathroom Mirrors

At the budget end I start by ruling things out. No MDF frames, which swell in steam. No mirror whose frame material the maker won't name as rust-resistant. No listing that gives no mounting method or hides what the glass is. From what's left, I hung and used the mirrors whose makers state something specific about the glass (tempered, a safety film, or simply standard glass), whose hardware comes in the box, and that come in sizes matching real vanities. These six are the ones I recommend to anyone renting.

What Each Price Tier Gets You

$: budget framed mirrors

This is the tier of this page. Expect an aluminum frame, a mounting method that runs from simple hooks to Z-bar brackets, and glass that is tempered, filmed or plain standard. The best of them, like the LOAAO and the TETOTE, spell out the glass and the hardware. The weakest leave both blank, and that is my cue to skip them.

$$: the mid-range step up

This is where I look when a bathroom gets heavy use or the mirror has to match a faucet. The usual gains are sturdier hanging hardware, more frame finishes and more sizes, though none of that is guaranteed, so read the listing.

$$$: premium mirrors

What You Give Up at the Budget End

A cheap bathroom mirror can look as good on the wall as a premium one. The differences are in the parts you don't see, and they decide how it looks in five years.

Hardware

Budget mirrors hang from hooks or a single fixing more often than from Z-bars or a French cleat. Hooks work, but the mirror can tilt and you have to get both screws level. The LOAAO and the TETOTE are the exceptions here; the mirrors in my main bathroom mirror guide make solid hardware the norm.

The backing

Few budget listings say how the silver layer is protected. A cheaper backing is more likely to show black edges in a steamy room. Protect it: spray cleaner onto the cloth, not the glass, and run the fan.

Frame metal

Every frame here is aluminum, which won't rust. What you give up is stainless steel, electroplated bronze and finishes designed to match a faucet brand, which keep their looks longer and come in more tones. Black dominates at this tier, with brushed nickel the main alternative.

Glass thickness and safety

Some budget mirrors are tempered, some have a film, and some have neither. If children use the bathroom, choose tempered glass or a safety film.

Measure the vanity first

Make the mirror 4 to 8 inches narrower than the vanity. A 24 inch vanity takes a 16 to 20 inch mirror; a 30 inch vanity, 22 to 26 inches. My bathroom mirror size calculator works it out for any width. On a budget, buying the right size matters more than buying the nicest frame.

Round, arched or rectangle

Rectangles give the most glass for the money and can hang on their side over a wider vanity. Rounds look more designed and suit small bathrooms, but a 24 inch circle shows less than a 22 by 30 inch rectangle. Arches suit pedestal sinks and give height where there's no counter to fill.

Read the glass line

Look for "tempered" or "explosion-proof film" in the features. "Shatterproof" alone tells you little. A listing that names its glass, even as standard, is more trustworthy than one that only calls it "HD".
